HIPBAR

HIPBAR

Overview

HipBar was launched by a liquor industry entrepreneur as the first vertical fintech platform for on-premise alcohol consumption. The platform allowed consumers to create a “bar in the cloud” through a digital wallet designed specifically for beverage alcohol purchases. The company later pivoted to become a last-mile delivery partner facilitating home delivery transactions.

Client Mandate

In 2018, Spectrum Communications was engaged to build brand awareness for HipBar among key stakeholders, including liquor brand owners, retailers, and consumers, while introducing the concept of a digital wallet for alcohol purchases.

Challenge

Liquor retailing in India operates within a highly regulated environment. Online buying and selling of alcohol is often perceived as legally ambiguous and risky, creating hesitation among industry stakeholders and consumers. Establishing credibility and acceptance for an e-commerce-driven model in this sector required careful positioning and strong advocacy.

Approach

Spectrum launched a multi-pronged PR campaign to build recognition for the brand and foster acceptance of e-commerce in liquor retail. Industry outreach was conducted through a series of meetings with commercial leaders from multinational and leading Indian liquor brands, encouraging them to list their products on the platform.

This engagement included USL–Diageo, which later invested $4 million in HipBar, validating both the concept and the visibility generated through the campaign.

Media advocacy played a central role, with startup and business publications featuring interviews with the founder, positioning him as a serial entrepreneur in the beverage alcohol sector and highlighting HipBar as his second venture in the industry. International media engagement further spotlighted the initiative as a pioneering concept in an otherwise conservative industry in India.

Outcome

HipBar’s bold and innovative proposition generated significant positive media attention, with the brand receiving more recognition than skepticism in industry and business publications. The investment by USL–Diageo served as a strong endorsement of the platform’s credibility and market potential.

When HipBar later pivoted to a home delivery partner model, Spectrum advised against further PR engagement to ensure complete compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks, including legal drinking age requirements and local retail laws.
